2026 Match OF THE YEAR

1/15/2026

ANTHONY & STEVEN

When Anthony joined the BBBS Career Buddies program at Pershing High School, he brought curiosity, kindness, and a drive to succeed. His Big, Steven, is one of the many dedicated Ally employees who volunteer their time each week to guide students like Anthony through real-world conversations about work, money, and life. Thanks to our partnership with Ally, students are welcomed into Ally Detroit Center every other Thursday for this career-focused mentoring program.

Where the match made a difference
Over this year and a half, Steven has helped Anthony develop a waste management business plan to help clean up Detroit. They keep in contact on the regular and work on the project during the sessions. Steven has helped with Anthony’s confidence and focus towards his future goals.

How Steven helped Anthony grow
Steven has definitely been part of Anthony’s success. Anthony wanted help with money, and their Thursday check-ins became a safe space to ask real questions and set goals. Last winter, Steven learned that Anthony didn’t have a winter coat. Steven worked with his Match Support Specialist (Zhiyon) and BBBS to secure a winter coat for Anthony, and Steven was willing to buy a winter coat if needed. Anthony shared, “That’s when I knew I could trust him.” Steven has helped talk to Anthony about his future and provide guidance for what to do after he graduates high school, with Anthony thinking about trade school. Anthony also joined BBBS for their Leadership Camp in 2025, and with the workshops from the Leadership Camp and guidance from Steven, Anthony was able to develop his waste management business plan.

All in on the mission
This match has also had the chance to interact outside the Ally building. A special school field trip was arranged by Ally and BBBS for a field trip to the Detroit Pistons career event, Fueling Futures. Steven attended the event (one of only 3 mentors to do so) and spent the event supporting Anthony as Anthony learned about future career paths in sports. Steven also recently attended one of our Tigers events.

Mentorship, out loud
Steven says it best: “It’s been an incredible experience mentoring with Anthony! He’s a bright kid with lots of ambition and I’m happy to have played a part in his growth! Congratulations, Anthony!”

And Anthony shared: “BBBS has been an open door of knowledge for me, Steven has been great and he listens to me and is very supportive. He has great life advice for me, for what I’ve been through.”

Overall, this has been an amazing match that highlights everything that is special about the BBBS program: positive, long-lasting relationships. We know Steven will stay in Anthony’s life long after they graduate from our program in June.

ALANA & MADELINE

Picture

Picture
Madeline and Alana have been matched for 3 years and their relationship has blossomed so much. Overall, they are a great match who has only grown closer over the last 3 years.

Where the match made a difference
Alana's confidence has grown as a result of the match with Madeline. Alana has separated from an older sibling and leaned toward their own identity and interests thanks to Madeline's guidance and support. Alana’s sense of independence is something that Madeline speaks highly of as Madeline helps Alana be confident in their interests while also helping Alana recognize good friends and influences.

How Madeline helped Alana grow
Madeline has supported Alana through elementary school and is now a guide as Alana tackles the challenges of middle school and puberty. Madeline has helped advocate for Alana's educational success, for example helping Alana and Takiyah understand the importance of having a plan and support system. Madeline has supported Alana through elementary and now middle school, and has helped Alana find a voice to advocate for herself.

All in on the mission
They participate in BBBS events when possible, and Madeline has always been supportive of BBBS by making suggestions to coworkers and encouraging an employer to connect with BBBS. Madeline has also reported feeling like family as holidays and special moments are celebrated, like prom and graduation with Alana's siblings. As Takiyah shared, “Madeline is a breath of fresh air! She really has become a part of our family and is around us all the time.”

Mentorship, out loud
“People think they have to be some kind of special person but just being with a child, being an average person sharing your experiences and being another consistent adult in their life is enough to make an impact.” — Madeline

Alana puts it simply: “Madeline is super nice and funny.” And some of the best moments are the traditions that give the match something to look forward to each year: “We go ice skating every year and I always look forward to it.”

2025 BIGS OF THE YEAR

4/22/2025

JAWAYNE & ZAY

Big Brother JaWayne and Little Brother Zacchaeus “Zay” are celebrated as 2025’s Match of the Year for their extraordinary two-year bond.

Their connection has flourished through adventures like creating habitats for tadpoles, exploring Zay’s love of animals, library adventures, and tackling goals like scavenger hunts and learning to garden. Zay’s mom, Lauren, proudly shares that he’s become more confident, outgoing, and willing to embrace new experiences—all thanks to JaWayne’s support and encouragement.

JaWayne and Zay’s relationship is a powerful testament to the life-changing impact of mentorship. JaWayne often gives Zay the reigns when it comes to deciding what they do together and supports him through research and exploration.

But JaWayne’s impact goes beyond their weekly outings. As a dedicated volunteer recruiter, speaker, and Ambassador Board member, he is championing the BBBSSEM mission, ensuring more children like Zay have access to positive role models. Their story is a reminder that a single mentor can ignite a lifetime of growth, joy, and confidence in a child—all while deepening their own sense of purpose and fulfillment.

KAYLEE & PASSION

Meet Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southeast Michigan's (BBBSSEM) Match of the Year: Big Sister Kaylee and Little Sister Passion. Since being paired in March 2023, they’ve shared nearly two years of growth, adventure, and connection.

From library visits that turned Passion’s dislike for reading into a love of books to trying fun activities like dancing in the snow and more, their relationship exemplifies the life-changing impact of mentorship. Also, this dynamic duo might look familiar—that's because they were BBBSSEM's Match of the Month in December 2024, and their bond has only grown stronger since.

This match is more than weekly outings—it’s a journey of transformation. Passion’s mom, Monica, describes the profound changes: “Passion has grown so much. She’s more confident, listens better, and is an incredible big sister at home.” Kaylee’s impact extends beyond their match as she actively supports the BBBSSEM mission, organizing donations and adopting families in need. Together, their bond demonstrates how a single mentor can inspire independence, foster joy, and create meaningful change.

Brothers in Hope: Mark & Carter’s Story of Healing and Fun

2/2/2024

Picture
Mark knew his role as a Big meant making a difference in a child's life. But when tragedy struck the family he was matched with, his commitment went above and beyond, forging a powerful bond with two brothers forever connected by loss.

Mark was originally paired with Dallas, a vibrant young boy who quickly saw him as “like a real brother.” Their shared love of sports, family, and fun fueled their adventures, from dinners and outings to memories captured on iPhone videos. But their journey was cut short when Dallas unexpectedly passed away from gun violence in June 2023.

Grief could have pushed Mark away, but he did the opposite. He knew Carter, Dallas’ younger brother, was also hurting. So, Mark reached out, offering not just support, but a chance to rebuild a connection they’d already begun. Officially matched in August 2023, their match journey began.

In just five months, Mark has made a profound impact on Carter’s life. “He helps me get out of the house and just have fun,” says Carter, echoing his mom’s sentiments. Mark introduces him to new experiences, from Top Golf to rock climbing, reminding him to have fun despite the pain. They even share conversations and memories of Dallas, keeping his spirit alive.

Mark, too, has found solace in their connection. “I see myself in Carter,” he shares, reflecting on his own loss of a brother to gun violence. “This is certainly not the way either of us wanted to be acquainted, but with this shared grief
“I have learned that family does not have to be related to you by blood. I’ve also learned that being a Big Brother has given me a purpose that I never knew I needed, but am grateful to be a part of.”Together, they’re healing, laughing, and making new memories. Carter’s hidden musical talent shines through his beat-making, with Mark his biggest cheerleader. Their shared passion for music, sports, and family creates a unique language only they understand.

This is more than just a match; it’s a testament to the power of human connection in the face of adversity. Mark and Carter’s story is a beacon of hope, reminding us that even in the darkest moments, kindness, brotherhood, and shared experiences can light the way forward.

Mia & Grace: Confidence Blossoms Through Friendship

2/1/2024

Picture
Mia, a shy 16-year-old, wasn't sure what to expect when she first met her Big, Grace. But over the past 2.5 years, their match has blossomed into a beautiful friendship that has transformed Mia's life.

Before Grace, Mia struggled with anxiety and making friends. But Grace saw her Little’s potential and patiently supported her journey. “She’s been there for me every time I was super anxious,” Mia shares, grateful for the unwavering support Grace offered through presentations, friendships, and even bullying situations.

This positive influence fueled Mia’s confidence. She blossomed into a leader, becoming one of the youngest BBBS Youth Ambassadors at 14! With her vision and leadership, Mia helped shape programs, empower other youth, and inspire them to use their voices.

Grace, a teacher, instilled valuable lessons in Mia, nurturing her work ethic, mental health awareness, and confidence. This support extended beyond Mia, as Grace’s passion for children shines through her teaching and mentorship.

Mia’s mother, Nintia, echoes the impact: “Grace is part of our family. We love how supportive she is.” She sees Grace as a role model, a source of new experiences, and a constant source of love and encouragement.

Their story resonates far beyond their match. Carmen, their Match Support Specialist, observes, “Grace has been great at supporting Mia through personal and educational challenges.” Mia’s growth inspires others, and as Carmen adds, “Having them continue to be part of BBBS is an opportunity to pass on future knowledge and resources to other matches.”
Mia and Grace’s incredible journey is a testament to the power of mentorship. Their story shines a light on the transformative impact of genuine connection, support, and shared growth. They are truly deserving of the “Match of the Year” title!

Big Brother of the Year: Casey Jackson

2/20/2023

Meet Casey, our 2022 Big Brother of the Year! Casey has been matched with his Little brother, Zaron, since 2018 and during that time they have become as bonded as family. Zaron’s mom says that Casey has been a huge blessing to Zaron, offering him support and encouragement in everything from school assignments to making healthier lifestyle choices. Casey is always there when Zaron needs him, happy to listen and give advice whenever needed, and frequently encourages him to try new things like camping, which has become one of their favorite shared activities.
In addition to consistently providing Zaron with support, Casey also gives him plenty of space to make his own choices and voice his thoughts and opinions. This sharing of power has helped increase Zaron’s confidence in himself and his ability to make good choices, which is a vitally important part of any mentoring relationship. Casey is dedicated to the BBBS mission as well,  frequently bringing Zaron to our events and outings and offering his assistance to our program whenever he can. These are just a few examples of why Casey is our latest Big Brother of the Year. Congratulations, Casey, and thank you for being a part of our village!

Big Sister of the Year: Brandy Lusk

2/20/2023

Meet our 2022 Big Sister of the Year, Brandy! Brandy is half of one of our fantastic school based matches and has been hanging out with her Little brother Jordan once a week whenever school is in session since early 2022. Brandy is always happily willing to run around and play with Jordan at school and take him around to new places throughout the community, and her presence in his life has helped Jordan focus on his school work and remain calm during stressful times.
Brandy is also an amazing advocate for Big Brothers Big Sisters, talking to those around her about the program and how much she is loving it. Brandy also volunteered to help with Big Brothers Big Sisters’ Adopt A Family program and is involved in the organization that helps Big Brothers Big Sisters’ Zombie Zap. This dedication to both her Little and to the Big Brothers Big Sisters mission is why she is our 2022 Big Sister of the Year! Congratulations, Brandy, and thank you for being part of our village!
