School-Based Mentoring
It may sound obvious, but sometimes the best place to help a child realize their potential is at school. Kids enjoy having their Bigs meet with them there, whether it’s in the classroom, the lunchroom, or on the playground. And parents know what a positive impact it makes.
It’s teacher-approved.Some of the biggest supporters of our School-Based Mentoring program are actually teachers. They see students come back from their time with their Big filled with confidence, smiling big, ready to learn and eager to succeed.
Learning about life. Were you ever that kid who always sat in the back of the class, or played alone at recess, or always felt overlooked by everyone? Did you ever wish that just one person would look over and say, "I see you"?
Well, we know a kid or two who are experiencing that right now and could really benefit from some one-on-one attention from you.
Spend time with him and you might just learn something, too!
As part of the School Based program, you will travel to your Little's elementary school once a week. For one hour the two of you can share lunch, play games, or make crafts. The one on one time you spend with your Little could be the one hour your Little looks forward to the most during the week! During the summer months, you and your Little continue building your relationship through email, post cards, letters, and phone calls.
The school districts currently participating in this program are the Ann Arbor Public and the Lincoln Consolidated Schools. In addition, BBBS has established partnerships with New Beginnings Academy in Ypsilanti. In order for a Little to participate in this program they are referred by school personnel (teacher and social workers).
Even though the mentoring takes place at school, our School Based program isn’t limited to the classroom. Of course, some Littles do talk with their Bigs about class, or do homework, or read together, but it’s perfectly fine to shoot hoops in the gym or play on the playground. At the end of the day, it's really all about starting a friendship, providing guidance and inspiring them to reach their full potential.
At Big Brothers Big Sisters, we have tremendous confidence in our ability to impact children and put them on the right path. But it means even more when an outside study comes to the same conclusion. Click to learn more about our Nationwide School-Based Mentoring Study.
